"Either
Side of 40" Studio Season
Join us in the Company’s studio for an intimate night of dance
featuring seven short works by seven choreographers. “Either
Side of 40” will explore the theme of aging
and the cycles of life in a fascinating season by artists who are
either side of this age.
Tiina Alinen has choreographed for Expressions,
QUT, and recently taught at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing
Arts and New Zealand School of Dance. Vanessa Mafe
danced with Queensland Ballet and has worked in Europe with numerous
first class dance theatre companies. Recently, Vanessa choreographed
a work for Accented Body in this year’s Brisbane Festival.
These two choreographers join forces with the artists of Expressions
Dance Company to investigate the mythology surrounding the milestone
of 40.
Choreographers: Tiina Alinen, Vanessa Mafe, Justin
Rutzou, Emily Amisano, Lizzie Chittleborough, Dan Crestani and Zaimon
Vilmanis.

Audiences
Around Australia Left Wanting more!
Expressions Dance Company toured the nation in August and September
performing Virtually Richard3 and The
5th Door in ten centres around Australia. Expressions
has been inundated with feedback from audience members, congratulating
the Company and asking the Company to return soon.
Expressions performed Virtually Richard3
in Wagga Wagga, Wollongong, Newcastle, Bendigo and Geelong and also
performed The 5th Door in Alice Springs,
Bathurst, Parramatta, Sale and Canberra. Both works were choreographed
by Founding Artistic Director Maggi Sietsma AM.
The critics agreed that both shows were powerful and passionate…
“Shakespeare with a powerful twist... They are all technically
strong and utterly convincing in their roles… This is an exceptional
and integrated work, superbly performed.”
Hilary Crampton, The Age, Melbourne
“The best moments play on the edge of passion and violence…
provocative dance theatre…”
Julia Cotton, Sydney Morning Herald
“Maggi Sietsma can be relied on to produce movement of
enormous sensuality, power, tension and expressiveness, which in
the hands of excellent dancers, is riveting… the work reinforces
Sietsma’s high status among contemporary Australian choreographers”
Larry Ruffell, The Canberra Times
As part of its outreach program, Expressions also conducted 43 workshops
for 24 high schools and 11 private dance schools during the tour.
765 students experienced dance and movement for drama workshops
with the professional artists they saw perform onstage. Many teachers
commented on the value of these workshops in assisting their students
to learn new movement skills and to better understand the performance.
The Australian Government is proud to be associated with this tour
through the national performing arts touring program, Playing Australia,
which gives Australians across the country the opportunity to see
some of our best performing arts. Tour Managed and coordinated by
the Regional Touring Office - ARTS.
