The 5th Door
Available for Touring
Choreography Maggi Sietsma
The 5th Door
offers a feast of movement, music and text! Choreographed by Maggi Sietsma,
The 5th Door
is a new take on the classic tale of Bluebeard.
This gripping work focuses on Bluebeard’s young wife Judith as she
learns the dark secrets of her husband’s past. Newly married, she
discovers her new home is inhabited by the ghosts of Bluebeard’s
former wives.
This high-octane physical dance theatre work is brilliant, full of haunting
tensions and strikingly vivid visuals.
"The dancers are exceptionally versatile as they navigate
their way between moments of deep trauma and heightened joy, between flinching
with pain and melting with desire, their technical mastery and maturity
as artists evident throughout the sophisticated crafting of the work."
Shaaron Boughen, The Australian.
"The 5th Door delivers technically impressive dance with
a forceful message." Cameron Pegg, Scene
Magazine.
"Strongly executed movement provides the cake, but it’s
the theatre that is the icing…. The performances, separately and
as an ensemble, are uniformly excellent." Olivia Stewart,
The Courier Mail.
Choreographer's Notes
"The
5th Door begins with Judith, newly
married, waking from a night dream which loudly shouts inner warnings
to the naive young woman. A modern young woman with an appetite for new
experiences and desires, Judith is swept up in the first rush of pleasure
and excitement and does not initially, listen to her deep intuitive misgivings.
When the first door opens she finds herself in her new home which is inhabited
by the ghosts of her husband’s former wives. As the work progresses
she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, and the deceit and lies of
romance and the social subordination she encounters become abhorrent to
her. With her innocent girlish dreams lying dead at her feet, Judith is
slowly drawn by a spool of inevitability towards the pale light of her
consciousness."
