Virtually Richard3
2005 Choreography by Maggi Sietsma
Virtually Richard3 is inspired by one of Shakespeare’s most powerful works, Richard
III. A classic example of an attractive wicked rogue, Richard
in this work has no need of love or pity – he is completely
self-centred and cares for no one. He lusts after danger, excitement
and personal power. Cruel and deceitful, he chooses to be a villain
and revels in his choice.
The
5th Door
2004 Choreography
by Maggi Sietsma
The 5th Door has its roots in an ancient yet entirely modern story - the story
of Bluebeard. The
5th Door begins with Judith, newly married, waking from a night
dream which loudly shouts inner warnings to the naive young woman.
A modern young woman with an appetite for new experiences and desires,
Judith is swept up in the first rush of pleasure and excitement and
does not initially, listen to her deep intuitive misgivings. When
the first door opens she finds herself in her new home which is inhabited
by the ghosts of her husband’s former wives.
Rites
of Spring
2002 Choreography
by Maggi Sietsma
In times past men and women celebrated, through ritual, the immense
primordial force which is Spring. In some cultures it was consecrated
by a human sacrifice and the original Sacre du Printemps by Nijinsky was based on an ancient Slavonic spring ritual which mimicked
courtship and human sacrifice. In Rites
of Spring I revisited and explored the drive, innocence, passion
and sophistication of both tribal and contemporary rituals. Yet tribalism
has not disappeared, it exists today in the form of distinct social
groupings and subcultures each with their own special codes and social
characteristics.
Alone
Together - with Information Package
1995 Choreography by Maggi Sietsma
For Alone Together, I chose the paintings of Edward Hopper
as the initial stimulus or starting point. Hopper was concerned with
emotional content in his art. Through his use of composition, light
and the figures depicted, he charged his paintings with a real sense
of drama. His works however, have a certain neutrality about them,
which offers the viewer the opportunity to engage in a personal imaginative
response.
Direct
Heat - with Information Package
1994
Choreography by Maggi Sietsma
When we search for lovers, are we attempting to regain our first intimacy?
Don Juan, the archetypal lover, has been the focus of artistic questioning
for hundreds of years. Was he merely a heartless seducer, a cruel
exploiter, or is it possible to see him as a victim of his own mythology?
We are all products of our early experiences, our first relationships
set the pattern for our future interactions. It was with these questions
in mind that I began to explore the life and loves of Don Juan.
Dream
Hunters - with Information
Package
1993 Choreography by Maggi Sietsma
The ideas, images and stories which come to us during our dreaming
are as lively and logical whilst sleeping as they are absurd and fantastic
when awake. Dream Hunters is an open work, by this I mean
the piece has been organised in such a way that the audience is invited
to develop its own imagery. Each viewer is free to decipher the work
in their own way, using creative and imaginative forces of the mind
at an intuitive level.
