Virtually
Richard3 Available for Touring Choreography by Maggi Sietsma Inspired by William Shakespeare's Richard III Expressions Dance Company is acclaimed for its compelling brand of dance theatre and Virtually Richard3 is high-octane dance at its best. Choreographed by Maggi Sietsma, Virtually Richard3 is inspired by one of Shakespeare’s most powerful works, Richard III. A classic example of an attractive wicked rogue, Richard in this work has no need of love or pity – he is completely self-centred and cares for no one. He lusts after danger, excitement and personal power. Cruel and deceitful, he chooses to be a villain and revels in his choice. Virtually Richard3 is a treat for those who like their dance theatre fast and physical. Starring Dan Crestani, a finalist in the 2002 and 2003 Australian Dance Awards for best male dancer, the excitement and raw energy of the dance will have you gripping the sides of your seat. Expressions Dance Company is internationally renowned for their powerful performances in the U.S.A., Mexico and throughout Europe and Asia. "An audacious, original, aurally and visually gripping performance piece…Expressions Dance Company was well worth waiting for and was greeted accordingly with enthusiastic applause…" John Maxim, The Herald Mexico Edition (Mexico) "The company has created a performance which passes through moments of pure grace and miraculous visuals." Les Nouvelles (New Caledonia). "Powerful steps in creative quality… they would rank among the best to be seen anywhere, and certainly one of the top companies in Australia. Sietsma’s breathtaking choreography transcends the craft… it’s a show of quality." Larry Ruffell, The Canberra Times (Australia) "Explosive dance theatre." Claudia Gass, Stuttgarter Zeitung (Germany). "The performance by Expressions Dance Company with their exceptional Virtually Richard3 is truly great, alarming and rousing theatre. We are left in amazement and admiration." Bernd Krause, Stuttgart (Germany). "Every component of this piece - design, lighting, sound and movement - works in harmony with the other ... It is a powerful work, and one that would bear viewing a second or third time." Denise Richardson Dance Australia. Choreographer's Notes "The structure of Virtually Richard3 can be compared to the slow, inexorable cycle of a wheel of fortune, where the central figure Richard, begins at the bottom of the wheel, swings up to the top as he increases in power through his own malicious machinations and then declines to the lowest point and death. Shakespeare’s Richard III presents a dense array of plots and characters and I have chosen to focus on episodes within the play that appeal and intrigue me most. These include the death of Clarence, the wooing of Lady Anne and her unfortunate demise, the lament of Elizabeth on the abduction of her children and Richard’s coronation, which ultimately leads to his final defeat and death. The incredible power of Richard’s character is what fascinates me most about the play. I feel almost manipulated or compelled by Shakespeare to admire Richard, even when objectively I know that he is not at all admirable."
